An ECG, or electrocardiogram, records the electrical impulses that travel through your heart with every beat. These impulses tell your heart muscle when to contract and relax. It is completely painless, non-invasive and does not send any electricity to your body. Small sticky electrodes placed on your chest, arms, and legs pick up this activity and translate it into wavy lines on a screen or paper.

An ECG records your heart’s electrical activity, but it does not show the heart’s structure or how well it pumps blood. For that, cardiologists usually recommend an echocardiogram (Echo), which creates real-time images of the heart using ultrasound.
An echocardiogram, commonly called Echo, uses high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to create a live, moving image of your heart. This test lets doctors know your heart’s size, how thick its walls are, how well each chamber is pumping and whether the four valves are opening and closing properly.
Echo is particularly useful for diagnosing heart failure, valve disease, congenital heart defects and fluid around the heart. It is also the go-to test for measuring ejection fraction, which is a number that shows how much blood your heart pumps out with each beat.
It is a non-invasive test and does not hurt; however, you may feel a cold gel or mild pressure on your chest from the ultrasound tool.

What Can’t an Echo Show?
Although an Echo provides detailed images of the heart’s structure and pumping function, it does not record the heart’s electrical activity or detect abnormal heart rhythms as effectively as an ECG.
This decision totally depends on your symptoms. If you are experiencing palpitations, irregular pulse or frequent fainting spells, consult a cardiologist. They will likely start with an ECG since it captures rhythm problems almost instantly.
If you have breathlessness, swelling in your legs, a known heart murmur or a family history of structural heart disease, an Echo gives a complete and detailed picture of your heart health.
No test is better than the other. Both tests are simply designed to answer different questions. Choosing the right test mainly depends on your symptoms.
