Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral disease spread mainly by Aedes mosquitoes, the same mosquitoes linked to dengue. The infection commonly causes high fever, severe joint pain, headache, fatigue, and skin rashes. India remains vulnerable due to dense populations, monsoon-related water stagnation, urbanization, and favorable mosquito breeding conditions.

While most people recover, joint pain can sometimes persist for weeks or months. Experts stress the importance of mosquito control, proper sanitation, and personal protection measures such as repellents and full-sleeved clothing.
