Rabies prevention: Why vaccine alone isn’t enough, you need immunoglobulin too

After a high-risk animal bite or possible exposure to Rabies, experts say the rabies vaccine alone may not always provide immediate protection. Rabies immunoglobulin is often needed because it supplies ready-made antibodies that help neutralize the virus quickly while the vaccine works to build long-term immunity.

This is especially important in severe bites, deep wounds, or exposures near the head and neck. Immediate wound washing with soap and water, timely medical care, and completing the full vaccination schedule are critical steps in rabies prevention. Delayed treatment can significantly increase the risk of life-threatening infection.
