Baby Bottle Syndrome: New Advice on Feeding and Weaning Babies to Reduce Tooth Decay Risk
Share
Baby Bottle Syndrome, also known as Early Childhood Caries, is tooth decay in infants caused by prolonged exposure to sugary liquids like milk, formula, or juice. Feeding babies bottles during sleep or for extended periods allows sugars to pool in the mouth, promoting bacterial growth and decay, especially in upper front teeth. To reduce the risk, parents should avoid giving bottles with sugary drinks at bedtime, transition babies to cups by age one, and maintain good oral hygiene by cleaning gums and brushing teeth early. Limiting sugary snacks and scheduling regular dental checkups also help protect babies’ dental health effectively.
