Pelvic pain, bloating, irregular or heavy periods and fatigue are common complaints, but they can point to very different conditions. PCOS, endometriosis and ovarian cancer can share several symptoms, which is why they are sometimes confused or diagnosed late. PCOS often involves irregular periods, acne and excess hair growth. Endometriosis is usually marked by painful periods, pelvic pain and difficulty conceiving. Ovarian cancer can cause persistent bloating, a feeling of fullness and pelvic or abdominal discomfort, and its symptoms are often vague in the early stages. Symptoms that are new, persistent or worsening should never be ignored or put down to “normal period problems”. A gynaecologist can use a clinical examination, ultrasound and blood tests to find the cause. Early evaluation leads to better outcomes.
