Influenza cases have risen across India this monsoon, and sales of medicines such as anti-infectives and painkillers have gone up with them. Doctors describe the pickup as largely seasonal. Most H3N2 and H1N1 cases are being treated at home, and hospitalisations have remained limited so far. Most flu is caused by viruses, so antibiotics do not help, and taking medicines without medical advice can do more harm than good. Rest, fluids and symptomatic care help most healthy people recover. Annual flu vaccination, hand hygiene, masking in crowded places and staying home when unwell can reduce spread. Children, older adults, pregnant women and people with existing conditions should see a doctor early. Seek urgent care for breathlessness, persistent high fever or chest pain.
