Endometriosis is often discussed in terms of pain and fertility, but a new long-term study suggests the health risks may go further. Following data from nearly 3 million women over 25 years, researchers found that women with endometriosis had a 46 per cent higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than women without the condition. Some forms of endometriosis showed a stronger link to diabetes than others. The study shows an association and does not prove that endometriosis causes diabetes. Women with endometriosis may benefit from regular blood sugar checks, a balanced diet, regular exercise and a healthy weight. If you have painful periods, pelvic pain, heavy bleeding or difficulty conceiving, speak to a gynaecologist for early evaluation and a long-term care plan.
