A recent study published in The Lancet reveals that diarrheal diseases are the leading cause of death in individuals aged 70 and above in South Asia. Despite global improvements in reducing diarrhea-related deaths, older adults in this region remain vulnerable due to weakened immune systems, chronic health conditions, and limited access to healthcare. Poor sanitation and hygiene also contribute to the spread of waterborne diseases. Preventive measures, such as ensuring access to clean water, promoting good hygiene, vaccination, and seeking timely medical care, are essential to reducing the risk of diarrheal diseases and improving health outcomes for older adults in South Asia.
