Empagliflozin, marketed as Jardiance, is an SGLT2 inhibitor used primarily for managing type 2 diabetes. It helps lower blood sugar by blocking glucose reabsorption in the kidneys and is also used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and kidney-related complications. The drug is typically taken once daily, starting at 10 mg and potentially increasing to 25 mg. Common side effects include urinary tract infections, genital yeast infections, and dehydration, while serious risks like diabetic ketoacidosis and kidney injury can occur. Empagliflozin is not suitable for type 1 diabetes and requires monitoring, particularly in patients with kidney or liver issues.
