Alzheimer’s is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, and it is not just a disease of forgetfulness. It also affects thinking, decision-making, recognition of direction and space, and everyday tasks. Occasionally misplacing things or not remembering someone’s name can be normal, especially if you remember shortly afterward. However, if the forgetfulness happens repeatedly, persists, increases over time, and affects daily life, it could be a sign of dementia. Aging is the biggest risk factor, but diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity, smoking, alcohol, low physical activity, poor sleep, and social isolation also increase the risk. Alzheimer’s cannot be cured completely, but it can be managed, and new diagnostic tests for early detection and new therapies for select patients are now available. A balanced diet, about 30 minutes of daily walking, good sleep, learning a new language or musical instrument, and socializing help in prevention. The patient’s family should understand that this is part of the disease and the patient is not doing it intentionally. Exercise patience, ensure safety at home, and stay in touch with a neurologist.
