How Monkeypox and Smallpox are different
Share
Monkeypox and smallpox, while both caused by viruses in the Orthopoxvirus genus, have distinct differences. Smallpox, which was eradicated in 1980, is more severe and highly contagious, characterized by a high fever and a distinct rash. In contrast, monkeypox is generally milder, with symptoms resembling those of smallpox but often presenting with fewer lesions. Transmission methods also differ, with monkeypox spreading through animal contact and less efficiently between humans.
