Ear bleeding – Causes and Treatment

Bleeding from any organ in your body is rarely hard to ignore. Ear bleeding is one such health concern that affects numerous people worldwide. Bleeding from the ear is more of a symptom than a condition in itself. There are various reasons attributed to blood coming from ear ranging from an underlying condition to an accident caused by rough poking of a Q-tip. Blood in ear can easily alarm people causing them to be fearful, anxious and scared. In such cases, timely intervention and care is the foremost need. In order to figure out what’s causing ear bleeding, we should begin by understanding the anatomical structure of the ear.

In this treatment, with key insights from Dr. Anish Gupta, we will explore various causes of bleeding from the ear and their management. Dr Anish Gupta is a leading ENT specialist at the Department of ENT Surgery in the CK Birla Hospital. Let’s kick start by theoretically opening up the structure of the ear.

Ear Bleeding – Understanding the ear structure

Location of the affected area in the ear is primarily the biggest tell to finding out the cause of bleeding from the ear.

The ear is divided into three sections – inner, middle and external. Hearing starts from the external portion when sound waves or vibrations travel down the auditory nerve and hit the eardrum causing it to vibrate. These vibrations are further passed on to the ossicles (tiny bones present in the middle ear) which amplifies the sound. From here on, the sound waves travel to the inner-ear into the cochlea (the fluid-filled segment of the ear).

The inner ear converts the sound waves into electrical impulses which are further forwarded to the brain that translates these impulses into sounds.

What is ear bleeding?

Ear bleeding is defined as the loss of blood from ear. Since it is a symptom indicative of another underlying condition, you may as well experience a range of other signs. These collective signs and symptoms characterise the cause of bleeding from the ear.

It is thus important to understand the different causes that may lead to ear bleeding. By learning about these conditions, you can select and identify which condition is affecting you and hence, seek timely intervention from an ENT specialist.

Ear bleeding causes

As stated earlier, there is no single exact cause of blood coming from ear. There are, in fact, numerous reasons that contribute to the leaking of blood. Herewith mentioned are some conditions that cause ear bleeding:

Ear injury

It is natural yet hurtful to experience any kind of injury. Injuries can also occur in any one of the three portions of the ear. Any type of injury can cause bleeding from ear ranging from a minor nail scratch, deep down insertion of a cotton swab to an accident or blow to the head causing trauma.

Apart from ear bleeding, an ear injury can cause:

  • Pain
  • Decreased hearing sense
  • Constant discomfort

Ruptured Eardrum

A ruptured eardrum or an eardrum perforation is a condition that causes damage in the form of a tear or hole in the skin tissues of the eardrum. An eardrum is a tympanic membrane that separates the middle ear from the ear canal. This membrane protects the middle ear from bacteria. Your ear may bleed if the eardrum ruptures or tears because of any reason. A ruptured eardrum can be caused by various conditions or situations including an extremely loud sound, insertion of a foreign object in the ear, middle ear infection and changes in the pressure around the ear.

Symptoms of ruptured eardrum include:

  • Ear bleeding
  • Sharp pain
  • A ringing or buzzing in the ear
  • Hearing loss

Ear Infection

An ear infection, also known as otitis media, causes inflammation of the middle, inner or outer layer of the ear due to bacteria or viruses. An ear infection can cause the middle ear to build up with fluid and swell up. This accumulation of fluid can increase pressure in your ear leading to leakage of fluid or bleeding. Ear infections can occur in anyone irrespective of age or gender. The symptoms differ in children and adults.

Symptoms of ear infection include:

  • Ear bleeding
  • Pain
  • Stuffy nose
  • Decreased hearing sense
  • High-grade fever

Object in the ear

Ear bleeding can result from insertion of a foreign object in the ear. This situation is more prominent in the case of children. Infants, toddlers and children are more likely to hold and place a foreign object (big or small) in their ear. Depending on the extent of the object insertion and severity of symptoms, such situations can be handled.

Besides ear bleeding, common symptoms caused by an object in the ear:

  • Pain
  • Discomfort
  • Reduced hearing or hearing loss
  • Damage to nerves

Changes in air or water pressure

You can experience sudden blood coming from ear when your ears experience a rapid transition in pressure levels. Any changes in the air or water pressures can cause your eardrum to move inwards leading to pain and stiffness. These changes can further lead to injuries making your ears bleed. This condition is known as barotrauma. You may experience such pressure changes during an aeroplane flight take off or during scuba diving.

Beside ear bleeding, you may feel the following symptoms due to changes in air or water pressure:

  • Pain and discomfort
  • A feeling that your ears are stuffed
  • Dizziness
  • Hearing loss
  • Ringing in your ears

Head Injury

An injury or trauma to the head resulting from an accident can cause internal bleeding as well as ear bleeding. A head injury is considered a medical emergency. If it is not treated timely, it may have life-threatening consequences.

A head injury can cause the following symptoms:

  • Ear bleeding
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Disorientation and confusion
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue and sleepiness
  • Difficulty in speaking
  • Trouble in sleeping
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of balance

Cancer

Ear cancer occurs when healthy cells in the ear begin to divide and multiply at an abnormal rate leading to the development of a tumour. Ear cancers can occur in any portion of the ear but mostly affects the outer ear. There are no obvious signs and symptoms of ear cancer in the early stages.

Ear cancer can lead to blood from ear among other symptoms, including:

  • Hearing loss
  • Fluid drainage from the ear
  • Ear pain from the inside
  • Inability to move your face towards the affected ear
  • Headache
  • Dizziness

Complications of ear bleeding

There are no direct complications of ear bleeding, however, if left unaddressed, the underlying cause of blood coming from ear can aggravate and lead to diverse and various complications.

Hence, the secondary complications of ear bleeding include:

  • Changes to speech and language perception
  • Permanent hearing loss
  • Constant ringing in the ear
  • Cognitive difficulties
  • Frequent headaches
  • Vertigo( for this you can consult our Vertigo Doctor)
  • Balance and coordination problems

Diagnosis of ear bleeding

The exact diagnosis is mainly dependent on the ear bleeding reasons. If you experience blood coming from ear, you should seek the help of an ENT specialist or primary healthcare provider.

Your doctor will first perform a thorough physical evaluation and review your condition. He/she will examine your ear as well as your head and neck area. Your doctor will further discuss your medical history and ask you questions about the onset of symptoms, your current medication (if any) and your lifestyle choices.

In case your ear bleeding is a result of a medical emergency such as accident, injury or trauma, your doctor will first manage your condition as he/she is aware that the bleeding is caused by the said event.

Your doctor may order a few tests and procedures to find out the ear bleeding cause. Common diagnostic tests done for this purpose are:

  • Blood tests
  • X-ray
  • CT scan

Treatment of ear bleeding

The treatment and management of bleeding from the ear is entirely based on the diagnosis, that is, the underlying condition.

In case of an accident or trauma, the first response of your healthcare provider will be to critically manage your condition. Your doctor will first aim to control or stop the bleeding. He/she will then proceed with the management of the underlying health condition.

Common treatment measures for ear bleeding include:

Medication – You will be prescribed certain medications such as antibiotics for treatment of ear infection caused by a bacteria. In case of viral infections, the medication will be different to respond to the virus. The medicinal approach also includes use of pain relief medicines.

Active surveillance – Sometimes ear bleeding improves on its own without any medical intervention. In some cases, your doctor will choose to carefully monitor your condition to design a personalised treatment plan if the bleeding recurs.

Warm compress – If you are experiencing ear bleeding at home, you can temporarily use a wet cloth dipped in warm water to place over your sore ear. This allows the pain and discomfort to subside.

Your doctor may also advise the use of ear protectants such as ear plugs or covers to prevent water or waste from entering your ears and causing bleeding.

The concluding note

Ear bleeding is a common condition experienced by children and adults. From the above article, we know that there are several ear bleeding reasons. While the above insights help you understand the different conditions causing bleeding from ear, only a verified healthcare provider can help you understand your specific condition. You should seek the help of an ENT specialist timely in case of blood coming from ear.

What’s Causing Your Abdominal Pain and How to Treat It

What’s Causing Your Abdominal Pain and How to Treat It

Abdominal pain, in other terms, is stomachache. Stomachache is simply your stomach throwing tantrums as you clearly weren’t paying attention to it and were not taking care of it. Stomach ache defines the pain and discomfort between the chest and the pelvis area. However, most of the abdominal pains are mind and can be taken care of by home remedies such as indigestion, gassiness, or muscle strain.

In this article, Dr Amit Javed, a leading GI, Minimal Access & Bariatric surgeon, explains the causes of abdominal pain, how one can treat them, and how to differentiate between the common stomach ache and severe stomach ache.

What is abdominal pain?

Abdominal pain is an internal pain caused due to discomfort and unwanted disturbances inside the abdomen. Several factors can be behind the pain caused, ranging from mild stomach pain to severe pain requiring immediate medical assistance. Digestive disturbances are considered one of the most commonly abdominal pain found in most people.

Abdominal pain is commonly referred to as a stomachache by many individuals. The abdomen, on the other hand, comprises a number of essential organs, muscles, blood vessels, and connective tissues, including:

  • Stomach
  • Liver
  • Large& small intestines
  • Kidneys
  • Pancreas
  • Spleen
  • Gallbladder
  • Appendix

Causes of Abdominal Pain

Abdominal pain is one of the most common complaints found in patients and there can be several reasons behind this, below mentioned are some common causes:

1. Gastroenteritis (stomach flu)

The stomach pain or stomach flu is typically accompanied by nausea, fatigue, vomiting, and loose, fluid-filled stools that occur considerably sooner and more frequently than normal after eating in this situation. Bacteria or any intestinal virus causes stomach infections, and their symptoms normally go away after some days. However, an infection that persists for more than 2-3 days indicates a severe health condition and may need immediate medical assistance to help eliminate an inflammatory disorder.

Common symptoms are

  • Nausea
  • Severe body weakness
  • Feeling fatigued
  • Stomach pain/cramps
  • A feeling of excessive bloating /gassiness

2. Gas

Gas is produced in the stomach when the bacteria or other microorganisms in the small intestines that break foods are intolerant and are not supporting the intestines. A person might feel a sharp pain or discomfort caused by increased pressure of gas in the intestine, which can also induce abdominal pain, farts or belching, and mild pain or discomfort in th chest. There are certain foods that are known to make you feel gassy or bloated like

  • Beans, broccoli
  • Dairy products (people who are lactose intolerant)
  • Fizzy and caffeinated drinks
  • Wheat
  • Beer and sugary alcohol
  • Chewing gum and har to chew candies
  • Garlic and onions
  • Fatty foods

3. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is an intestinal disorder that causes severe abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and constipation. A person with IBS has a constant urge to visit the washrooms every 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the severity of the disorder. The reason for IBS is unknown, and it can only be managed long term but cannot be cured.

A proper diagnosis based on the symptoms is required to know the possible reason for IBS. Abdominal pain is common in IBS patients, and it is often relieved after a bowel movement. IBS symptoms include bloating, gas, nausea, cramps, diarrhea, constipation, and bloating. Changing one’s diet, lifestyle, and medications can help some people manage their symptoms.

4. Acid Reflux

Stomach acids usually go backwards into the throat (oesophagus), and this acid reflux is generally accompanied by a burning sensation, mild pain and discomfort in the abdomen and throat. In an individual/patient, acid reflux can also cause bloating and cramping in the abdomen. In addition, acid reflux causes a burning sensation in the lower chest area, which usually occurs after eating and is common and riskier for patients addicted to smoking and overweight or are obese.

The most prevalent treatment that an exert will suggest is drug therapy, which is available both on prescription and over the counter (OTC).

5. Constipation

When too much waste gets collected in the bowel, it adds pressure on the colon, making it difficult for th individual to pass the bowels comfortably, thereby causing pain. There can be several reasons behind constipation, such as lack of fibre intake, consumption of low fluid in the diet. Constipation and abdominal pain also impact the physical activities of an individual. A doctor should treat any blockage in the intestinal tract if it persists and is causing discomfort.

6. Bowel Obstruction

When the stomach pain starts to feel like it comes and goes in waves, it clearly indicates bowel obstruction. In some cases, there can be partial or total obstruction of the bowel. Bloating and abdominal pain are symptoms of bowel blockages. The discomfort, which could be cramping or colicky, comes in waves and temporarily goes away. However, it’s possible that you won’t be able to discharge your bowel in a proper manner(pass gas/wind). You may experience diarrhoea if the blockage is only partial. Depending on the severity of the abdominal pain, the doctor will recommend if surgery is needed.

7. Gastritis

When there is inflammation and severe discomfort in the stomach lining, you feel irritated and bloated, thereby indicating gastritis. Symptoms that can help diagnose gastritis include nausea, vomiting, gas, and bloating. Why this inflammation and pain occurs can have multiple reasons, some common causes are injury, infection, excessive use of pain pills and excessive alcohol.

Treatment and Home Remedies for Abdominal Pain

Below are some of the most common and popular home remedies for treating abdominal pain

1. Ginger

Ginger is a common remedy for treating upset stomach and indigestion. Ginger contains a chemical called gingerols which can help treat stomach contractions. Ginger is known to reduce the feeling of vomiting, and nausea and also treats pain and discomfort caused due to loose motions. Ginger can be consumed in the form of tea.

2. Carom Seeds

Carom seeds commonly called ajwain in households is one of the most simple remedies for treating stomach cramps and discomfort. It helps to soothe the inflammation and treats indigestion, acidity, and acid reflux.

3. Avoid smoking and drinking

Smoking and drinking can cause heat in your stomach thereby leading to inflammation. Smoking can irritate the throat and stomach which can make your stomach tissues sore. Alcohol is not easy to digest thereby damaging the liver and stomach lining.  People who are prone to stomach pain should avoid or limit their smoking and drinking.

4. Lemon juice/ Lemon water

Mixing lemon juice with water along with a pinch of baking soda can help relieve digestive issues. Lemon juice can help relieve sudden feelings of gas and indigestion.

5. Aloe vera

Aloe vera consumed in the form of juice can help reduce excess acid in the stomach, which supports the stomach in improving the digestion process and also helps to balance digestive bacteria.

Home remedies act as an immediate treatment plan for abdominal pain as it helps to relieve heartburn, nausea, vomiting, flatulence and belching.

How Can I Prevent Abdominal Pain?

We all are aware that prevention is better than cure. So, it is important to prevent your stomach from being normal to continuous rumbling. Here are some good and common tips to follow:-

  • Avoid eating more than your stomach can handle
  • A good intake of fluids, especially water or fresh cold-pressed juice
  • Avoid eating too much before bedtime
  • Wash your hands properly before eating
  • Eat foods rich in fibre such as fruits and vegetables

To Conclude

Though the majority of cases of stomach discomfort are not serious, and the symptoms usually go away within hours to days with simple home remedies like rest and fluids. But if the pain persists, then visiting a healthcare expert would be the best solution. Dr Amit Javed, a leading GI, Minimal Access & Bariatric surgeon, is one of the best medical experts who could help lessen and control the symptoms in case there is acute or chronic abdominal discomfort that lasts more than 2 days.

Laparoscopy: the future of GI & bariatric surgeries

The concept of surgery has, earlier, been associated with lengthy hospital stay, immense pain, scarring and a lot of anxiety. However, the days of such setbacks are long gone and rightly so. Today, the portrait of surgical care has shifted to maximum ease and comfort. Let’s discuss how advancements in medical science have changed GI, minimal access and bariatric surgery.

About Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy, also known as minimal access surgery, was first introduced in the early 1970s. It is a novel technique that has diverse benefits over traditional surgery for both the surgeon and patients.

A laparoscopic surgery allows the surgeon to access the insides of your abdomen by making several (usually 3-4) small incisions. It is performed with the use of a state-of-the-art medical device called laparoscope. A laparoscope is a thin, small tube that has a light source and camera attached at one of its ends. This fibre-optic instrument enables real-time visualisation of the surgical site making it easier for the surgeon to operate.

Laparoscopic surgeries increase the magnification of surgical site upto 20 times allowing the surgeon to access and treat the abnormalities more precisely.

The application of laparoscopy is consistently rising and goes beyond gastroenterology.

Application in GI and bariatric procedures

Following surgical services are offered in a minimally invasive manner:

  • LASER treatment for piles
  • Laparoscopic gallstone removal
  • Laparoscopic hernia repair
  • Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
  • Nissen’s Fundoplication for Reflux Disorders
  • Laparoscopic Colo-Rectal Surgeries
  • Diagnostic GI endoscopy

Laparoscopic advancements and benefits for patients

Technological advancements and better healthcare delivery go hand-in-hand. Laparoscopic surgery has diverse benefits for both the patients and care provider.

Higher safety and precision – Chief feature of surgical advancements is the increased safety and precision offered by laparoscopy. The video feed, optical imaging and high tech advances allow the surgeon to have a detailed and clear view of the abdomen. The virtual environment makes it convenient for the healthcare provider to operate with higher accuracy and thus more safety.

Improved patient experience – The highlighting features of minimal access surgery include less pain, reduced risk of infection, smaller incisions and smaller scars. A patient is not required to spend several days at the hospital now. Laparoscopy shortens your hospitalisation with certain procedures offering same day discharge. It additionally prevents readmissions and improves the overall quality of life and care for patients.

Fewer risks of complications – One of the biggest worries for a patient is the risk of developing surgical complications. These include infections, heavy blood loss, shock and breathing difficulties and more. Laparoscopic surgery considerably reduces these risks making the post operative recovery easier for the patients.

Better outcomes – The advanced technique of minimally invasive surgeries ensures best possible surgical outcomes. These surgeries have higher effectiveness due to their nature of increased safety and precision.

Cost-effectiveness – Minimally invasive techniques also leave a long-term positive impact on your pocket. Reduced readmissions, full and final treatments and faster recovery helps save cost in terms of finances, lost wages as well as physical and emotional strains.

How does PCOS affect your quality of life?
Mar 29, 2022|Dr Alka Gupta

How does PCOS affect your quality of life?

Our lifestyles play an important role in determining our overall health. Today, unhealthy eating habits, poor nutritional choices, lack of physical activity and all-in-all a sedentary way of life have paved the way for numerous health concerns like PCOS.

PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is a growing concern affecting 1 in 5 Indian women. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, leading gynecologists’ at the CK Birla Hospital give their key insights on the impacts of PCOS on a person’s quality of life.

Dr Archana Pathak says, “PCOS is a lifestyle-related disorder. It is a hormonal condition that mostly affects women in the reproductive age group. To put it briefly, this condition is caused by a hormonal imbalance in women causing psychological and physical manifestations.”

PCOS is characterised by three prominent features – irregular periods, excess levels of androgen (male hormones) and the presence of polycystic ovaries.

“We are seeing multiple patients with PCOS every day in our OPD. Women, especially young adults come to us with complaints of unwanted facial hair, missed or no periods, obesity, acne and an inability to get pregnant. But despite its high incidence, only a few women are aware of this condition and its effects on health.”, adds Dr Nivedita Kaul.

The exact cause of PCOS is not yet known. Researchers know that various factors contribute to the development of this disorder. Common factors include excess levels of insulin in the body and high levels of androgen. PCOS can also be inherited.

“While we do not know why PCOS is exactly caused, we do know that it can lead to a range of complications, if not treated timely. Women tend to ignore these symptoms that affect their everyday health. Even the minutest symptoms like persistent acne should be taken care of. I advise all young women to take note of these signs and changes in their body and consult a gynaecologist routinely.”, says Dr Seema Sehgal

PCOS, if not treated, can negatively impact the quality of your life. Besides the troubling symptoms, it can also lead to other health conditions. Untreated PCOS can cause:

  • Accumulation of fat in the liver
  • High blood pressure
  • High sugar levels in the blood
  • Abnormal levels of cholesterol
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Uterine bleeding

Commenting on the complications of PCOS, Dr Gurleen Sikka says, “If not detected and managed in a timely manner, PCOS can cause health concerns in your pregnancy and impact your married life. This disorder can translate into pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes and even loss of pregnancy.”

Dr Poonam Sidana adds, “PCOS can even cause complications in getting pregnant. A large number of women experience infertility issues due to PCOS. Women should, hence, consult gynaecologists routinely to know their risk and avoid these problems in their pregnancy.”

Since it is a lifestyle disorder, this condition can be effectively managed with lifestyle changes only. Dr Archana Pathak suggests the following measures to control the PCOS problem:

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Most of the patients who suffer from PCOS also experience obesity. There is an established correlation between these two. In order to manage PCOS, you should aim to achieve and maintain healthy body weight.

Eat a Healthy Diet

Avoiding carbohydrates can help reduce insulin levels in your body. Instead, you should eat healthy carbohydrates that raise your blood sugar levels in a slow and healthy manner.

Be Physically Active

Reduce your blood sugar levels by engaging in physical activity each day. Aim to exercise 30-40 minutes everyday.

Preventive measures to avoid total knee & hip replacement surgery

Preventive measures to avoid total knee & hip replacement surgery

Age-related changes such as hip and knee joint pain are an inevitable part of life. As you grow old, your joints become weak and lose their mobility due to regular wear and tear and underlying health conditions. Hence, an increasing number of people are considering knee and hip replacement surgeries.

But do you know that it is possible to avoid these surgeries and preserve your joint health?

“Elderly people, especially in the age group of 60 and above, are the most common complainants of hip and knee pain. While joint replacement surgery is an effective treatment option, it can be prevented. In my practice, I actively advise my patients to take necessary preventive measures that majorly include lifestyle changes”, says a leading orthopaedic expert at the CK Birla Hospital.

Explaining the age consideration for replacement surgery, the doctor adds, “Each case is unique and while age is an important factor, it is not the only one. We evaluate how the symptoms are affecting your everyday life and your overall health before determining the need for surgery. If there is no medical urgency, we plan a treatment protocol for you in a personalised manner to improve your function, independence and quality of life”.

Ways to Prevent Knee and Hip Replacement

Dr Akshay Kumar Saxena, top orthopaedic expert at the CK Birla Hospital, talks about some handy ways to avoid knee and hip replacement surgery in advanced age.

Low-impact exercises: Moving your joints regularly keeps your joint cushions lubricated and functional in the long term. You should do walking, cycling or yoga everyday to strengthen your joints and maintain mobility.

Physical therapy: A combination of exercises and physiotherapy is ideal to preserve your strength and balance. Consult a physiotherapist if you experience pain and discomfort in your knee or hip joint.

Weight loss: Being overweight can increase pressure on your knees and hips. Even losing a small amount of extra weight can reduce this stress on your joints. You should shed extra pounds to reduce your risk of joint problems.

Medication: Your doctor can prescribe medications to help alleviate the symptoms. You may also ask your doctor for joint injections to improve movement and reduce pain.

Nutritious diet: Your diet plays an important role in strengthening your bones and enhancing the health of your joints. You should include calcium-rich food products in your diet to preserve your  cartilage. Good nutrients like calcium also increase the number of red blood cells in your body. Eat dark, green leafy vegetables, almonds and omega-3 fatty acids to decrease pain and nourish your joints.

Walking aids: With growing age, your chances of falling and getting injured also increase. It is suggested that you make use of walking aids and supports such as cranes and braces to avoid hip or knee injuries that may lead you to have joint replacement surgery.

The doctor adds, “Understanding your individual risk is important to design a prevention plan. At the CK Birla Hospital, we offer comprehensive diagnosis and treatments to keep you moving through all stages of life.”

Plastic surgery: Is it only for celebrities?
Mar 29, 2022|Dr. Rajat Gupta

Plastic surgery: Is it only for celebrities?

Plastic surgery has recently gained a lot of popularity in India, especially among celebrities. Famous Bollywood personalities including Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma and Shilpa Shetty have undergone aesthetic procedures to attain their idea of beauty. While these celebrities have given more prominence to the science of plastic surgery, it has also given rise to a popular opinion that plastic surgery is only for celebrities!

“The simple truth for this misconception is – No. Plastic surgery is for everyone.”, says Dr Rajat Gupta.

He adds “People believe that plastic surgery is only about beautifying but it is not just limited to aesthetics. Plastic surgery is, in fact, a wide and comprehensive field that also focuses on reconstructive surgeries for various emergencies, trauma and illnesses.”

The sudden vogue of plastic surgery is credited to some surgeries and procedures. Breast augmentation, nose job, tummy tuck and facelift have made the field very sought-after, to name a few. However, there is a group of procedures such as oral and maxillofacial surgeries, facial and body deformity correction, burn treatment and cleft lip treatment that covers the therapeutic approach as well.

Plastic surgery for the common man

Anyone who is medically eligible to undergo plastic and reconstructive surgery can benefit from these procedures. Whether or not you are appearing on the big screen, any person can wish to enhance their appearance.

Plastic surgery offers a wide range of benefits for the common man. It helps uplift your self-image and creates a positive frame of mind.

Common psychological advantages include:

  • Boost your confidence and self-esteem
  • Attain your beauty and health goals
  • Enhance your natural appearance
  • Improves your mental and emotional wellness
  • Helps treat social anxiety and depression

On top of the above feel-good factors, plastic surgery helps you achieve optimal well-being. There are numerous health benefits depending on the type and location of surgery. For instance, rhinoplasty (nose surgery) helps in the treatment of functional sleep apnea, tummy tuck procedure can help manage obesity and breast reconstruction can help a breast cancer patient.

Common physical health benefits include:

  • Improves overall physical health
  • Promotes quality of life
  • Surgery for the nose improves breathing and quality of sleep
  • Helps control weight
  • Reduces the risk of diabetes & cardiovascular disease
  • Provides better-looking skin and reduces skin irritation
  • Relieves pain
  • Better vision

No more a ‘taboo’

The branch of plastic surgery has been associated with a range of myths. The foremost on this list is that plastic surgery is a tool only for the rich and famous. However, that perception is changing.

Dr Rajat Gupta says, “At the Plastics & Aesthetics Centre of the CK Birla Hospital, we offer a range of treatment protocols for all sections of the community. We inform and encourage our patients about the risks and rewards of surgeries so that they can focus singularly on their goals without idolising celebrities.”

There was a time when it was believed that plastic surgery is only for women. Thankfully, this taboo has also been shed away. Men, women and children across all age groups can avail the benefits of plastic surgery.

Why seek a second opinion for cancer diagnosis?

Why seek a second opinion for cancer diagnosis?

Cancer is a highly common and complex disease affecting millions of people worldwide. While a cure for cancer is still undiscovered, we have come a long way in terms of treatment effectiveness.

Dr Mandeep Singh says, “Today, we have various treatment options for most types and stages of cancer. There has been tremendous growth in cancer care ranging from modern technologies to the scope of diagnostic review. This allows patients to receive carefully mapped treatment.”

A cancer diagnosis can be very overwhelming and create a sense of urgency wanting you to start your treatment as early as possible. However, a hurry in deciding your treatment plan welcomes a scope of error. It is important to consider a second opinion if you have been diagnosed with cancer.

Why seek a second opinion for cancer treatment?

A second opinion is the review of your cancer diagnosis and established treatment recommendations. It allows you to explore and be confident about the next steps in your treatment journey.

A second opinion can help you:

Confirm your diagnosis

Nobody is prepared to learn that they have cancer. It is important to be sure of the type, stage, size and location of cancer before starting with its correction. You should always seek a second opinion to confirm your cancer diagnosis. It can help you avoid any detection errors or diagnostic dilemmas.

Explore your treatment options

A second opinion allows you to survey the variety of options you have. It gives you a chance to learn about new technologies available for your condition. A second opinion is even more important in complex conditions such as head and neck cancers. Cancer care involves a multidisciplinary approach. Considering a second opinion allows you to consider the experience of doctors, ICU backup and availability of critical care specialists.

Dr Mandeep adds, “We see a lot of patients who have been recommended to get mastectomy for breast cancer. When they seek a second opinion from us, we give them a better alternative such as breast preservation. Similarly, some doctors directly prefer to do surgery while we check patients for how they are responding and offer them options like immunotherapy.”

Be confident about your treatment

Cancer is a long-term illness. It, thus, requires long-term care. Once you decide on a treatment protocol, you will be deciding on a long-term relationship with your cancer care team. You should ensure that you are comfortable with your oncological team and their approach. A second opinion can help certify that.

Be prepared for surgery

Availing cancer care is not limited to undergoing clinical treatments. It also involves amplified awareness and education of your care plan. A second opinion is your chance to not only learn about different options you have but also the way they will be used for treating your cancer. This information can help you prepare for surgery if needed.

Dr Mandeep Singh adds, “While cancer is a life-threatening illness, a second opinion can be a life-saving measure. If you have received diagnoses for a rare or even common type of cancer, consider seeking a second opinion at the Oncology Centre, CK Birla Hospital.”

(Types of jaundice in Hindi)

(How does jaundice spread in Hindi)

(Piliya ke lakshan in Hindi)

(Jaundice kya hota hai)

(Who is prone to jaundice in Hindi)

(Complications of jaundice in Hindi)

(How is jaundice diagnosed in Hindi)

(Jaundice treatment in Hindi)

(Prevention of jaundice in Hindi)

(When to see doctor for jaundice in Hindi)

Is your pregnancy high-risk?
Mar 28, 2022|Dr. Archana Pathak

Is your pregnancy high-risk?

Pregnancy is one of the most delightful yet cautious times in a woman’s life. Naturally, during the course of 9 months, an expectant mother lives with excitement, nervousness, joy, worry and a whole lot of mixed emotions about the health of her child. These emotions are even greater in intensity if you have a high-risk pregnancy.

Dr Archana Pathak, a leading obstetrician and gynaecologist at the CK Birla Hospital, describes high-risk pregnancy as a pregnancy when there is an increased risk of health concerns to the mother or the fetus.

She adds, “A wide range of factors contribute to your pregnancy being a high-risk one. Primarily, lifestyle choices, underlying medical conditions and genetic factors can put a healthy pregnancy at risk.”

What makes a pregnancy high-risk?

There are several factors that can increase the risk of health complications for you and your fetus. Common risk-factors include:

  • Advanced maternal age
  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • Consumption of alcohol
  • Underlying health problems in mother such as diabetes, high blood pressure
  • Multiple pregnancy
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Genetic problems

Dr Pathak adds, “Each pregnancy is unique. Hence, the biological markers of every expectant mother that may put her at a high-risk pregnancy are also different.”

Can I avoid a high-risk pregnancy?

It is possible to prevent or reduce the risk factors of a complicated pregnancy. Doctors, worldwide, suggest the following measures to promote a healthy pregnancy.

Consult a obstetrician before conceiving

It is advised that you should consult a healthcare provider while trying to conceive so that you can receive comprehensive care and understand the factors that may put you at risk.

Seek routine prenatal care

Regular prenatal care helps your doctor in monitoring and understanding the growth and development of your fetus. Prenatal visits provide vital information about the various changes in your body. By examining these changes, your doctor can help manage or avoid any pregnancy complications in a timely manner.

Eat a well-balanced diet

Consult your dietitian to help plan a nutrient-dense diet plan for you. You should ensure to meet your caloric intake and a variety of healthy food items including protein, folic acid, omega-3 fatty acid and fiber. Your ideal diet plan should also help you in maintaining a healthy weight to avoid pregnancy complications.

Avoid risky behaviors and lifestyle habits

Your obstetrician will provide personalised guidance on how to keep your pregnancy healthy. This guidance will involve specific information on your dietary habits and lifestyle choices such as smoking and alcohol intake.

Get advanced prenatal screenings and tests

Prenatal scans and tests help in identifying whether your baby will have certain birth or genetic defects. Prenatal tests include blood tests, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), ultrasound and amniocentesis.

“High-risk pregnancy is not a cause of panic. Today, medical facilities have advanced greatly. Doctors can now detect and identify your health risks before you conceive. There are effective protocols and measures to help manage the effects of high-risk pregnancy. We offer comprehensive high-risk pregnancy management at the CK Birla Hospital.” says Dr Pathak.
