Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Women's healthcare from first pregnancy to lifelong gynaecological wellbeing

CK Birla Hospital’s Obstetrics & Gynaecology department covers the full arc of women’s health; pre-conception planning, pregnancy care, labour and delivery, gynaecological surgery, cancer screening, and post-menopausal support. Obstetricians, gynaecologists, anaesthetists, fetal medicine specialists, neonatologists, nutritionists, midwives, and women’s health physiotherapists work as one team, not in parallel silos.

The numbers behind the team: over 100 years of combined clinical experience, more than 50,000 gynaecological surgeries, and a Level III NICU that runs 24 hours a day. A centralised fetal monitoring system lets consultants access patient data remotely, one of the few setups of its kind in India. Emergency and critical care are on-site, not on-call.

Normal Delivery

Birthing plans are designed from early in pregnancy to support natural labour. Mothers can choose water birthing and opt for different delivery positions. CK Birla Hospital is one of the first facilities in North India to offer water birthing.

High-Risk Pregnancy

Gestational diabetes, hypertension, endometriosis, and multiple pregnancies all carry elevated risk. Our high-risk team uses genetic testing, amniocentesis, and chorionic villus sampling, backed by anaesthetic and critical care support available around the clock.

Antenatal Care

Consultations are spaced across the pregnancy and include prenatal scans, nutritional guidance, genetic counselling, Lamaze classes, and fetal medicine. Postnatal care, including breastfeeding guidance, which continues after delivery.

C-Section

Planned and emergency caesarean sections are supported by the NICU and critical care teams. For mothers who have previously had a C-section but want a natural delivery, our VBAC programme offers a structured, closely monitored route to vaginal birth, with shorter hospital stays and a faster recovery compared to a repeat caesarean.

Labour Pain Management

We are the only hospital in North India with piped Entonox® as an inhaled pain relief option during labour. Epidural analgesia and water birthing are also available.

Fetal Medicine

Our fetal medicine specialists diagnose, monitor, and perform interventional procedures for developmental complications during pregnancy using an advanced maternal fetal medicine centre.

Level III NICU

Premature and critically ill newborns are cared for in a Level III NICU and Special Care Baby Unit, staffed by obstetricians and neonatologists. The unit handles preterm births, complex neonatal conditions, and multiple births.

Gynaecology

Menstrual Disorders

Heavy bleeding, irregular cycles, intermenstrual bleeding, and severe period pain are assessed and treated based on individual medical history, severity, and whether the patient plans to have children. Not every case needs surgery.

Endometriosis

Tissue growing outside the uterus causes pain and, in many cases, fertility problems. We remove it laparoscopically and use hormone-based therapies to slow recurrence.

PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome causes irregular periods, elevated androgens, acne, and difficulty conceiving. Management combines lifestyle changes with medication and long-term hormonal care, calibrated to the individual.

Uterine Fibroids

Non-cancerous growths on the uterine wall are removed through hysteroscopy or myomectomy, preserving the uterus unless clinical circumstances require otherwise.

Ovarian Cysts

Many ovarian cysts resolve without intervention. Larger or symptomatic cysts are treated with minimally invasive surgery. Ruptured cysts require urgent care.

Pelvic Floor Disorders

Weakened pelvic floor muscles, frequently caused by pregnancy or childbirth can affect bladder and bowel control. Treatment ranges from physiotherapy and pelvic floor exercises to surgical correction

Sexually Transmitted Diseases

We screen for and treat gonorrhoea, chlamydia, genital herpes, HPV, and trichomoniasis. Sexual health consultations are conducted privately.

Menopausal Problems

Hot flashes, sleep disruption, mood changes, and hair loss during perimenopause and menopause are managed through hormone replacement therapy, vaginal oestrogen, and lifestyle guidance, adjusted over time as symptoms change.

Gynaecological Cancers

Cervical, uterine, ovarian, vaginal, and vulvar cancers are diagnosed and staged on-site. Routine check-ups remain the most effective tool for early detection. Patients intending to have children in future can opt for fertility preservation before starting treatment.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

A severe version of PMS, PMDD causes significant mood disturbances, fatigue, bloating, and breast tenderness in the days before menstruation. Antidepressants, hormonal therapies, and lifestyle changes are used depending on severity.

Hysterectomy

Total, subtotal, and radical hysterectomies are performed for fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic organ prolapse, and gynaecological cancers. Vaginal hysterectomy - where the uterus is removed through the vagina without external incisions, is offered where clinically suitable and cuts recovery time compared to an abdominal approach.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

A bacterial infection of the reproductive organs that can cause chronic pelvic pain, infertility, or ectopic pregnancy. Antibiotic treatment is started promptly; hospitalization is required for severe cases.

Vaginitis

Yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, and trichomoniasis cause itching, abnormal discharge, and discomfort. Diagnosis uses microscopy and lab testing; treatment is targeted to the specific cause.

Low Amniotic Fluid (Oligohydramnios)

Below-normal amniotic fluid levels can restrict fetal growth and affect lung development. We monitor through ultrasound, manage maternal hydration, and plan early delivery when clinically indicated.

Vulvar Cancer

A rare malignancy of the external genitalia, often linked to HPV or chronic inflammation. Treatment , surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or a combination, depends on cancer stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Blood tests, urine tests, ultrasound, genetic testing, chorionic villus sampling, and amniocentesis are standard components.

A visit is recommended if puberty hasn’t started by age 14 or periods haven’t begun by 16. Routine pap smears start at 21.

Eat well, sleep enough, exercise moderately, stay hydrated, and take prenatal vitamins. Avoid alcohol, smoking, raw or unprocessed food, and high caffeine.

Prolonged labour, abnormal fetal position, fetal distress, birth defects, prior C-section, or chronic maternal conditions can each make surgical delivery the safer option.
