Impetigo is caused by bacteria that lead to infection. Staphylococcus aureus, group A streptococcus, are the most common impetigo infection. An untreated impetigo infection can lead to deep skin infections like cellulitis, lead to kidney problems, cause rheumatic fever or scarlet fever, etc.
