Blind women use touch to detect breast cancer

A first of its kind study claims that when visually impaired women use tactile strips to map every centimetre of the breast, their high levels of sensitivity bring out better results, saving women by early detection.

A voluntary organisation based in Delhi, the National Association for the Blind’s Centre for Blind Women has started training women to be MTEs to empower them professionally and financially. This training has been certified by the Rehabilitation Council of Germany.

Breast Cancer: Visually Impaired Women Can Help In Detecting Breast Cancer With Tactile Breast Examination

Indian women have inherently higher breast density, in comparison to western women, with the peak incidence at 40– 50 years. Such facts also suggest the limited application of screening mammography in Indian settings. Even manual breast screening methods such as Self Breast Examination (SBE) and Clinical Breast Examination (CBE) are sparingly used in India.

In such a scenario, Tactile Breast Examination is a unique breast screening technique offered by CK Birla Hospital that uses highly developed sensory skills of visually impaired women for manual breast health screening.

Lifestyle Tips for PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition caused by an imbalance of estrogen and progesterone (female hormones), and an increase of androgens (i.e. male hormones). A few PCOS symptoms include irregular periods or absence of menstruation, thinning of hair or hair loss, excessive hair growth (usually on the face, chest, back or buttocks), weight gain, difficulty getting pregnant, oily skin or acne, etc.

Insulin resistance is one of the leading causes of PCOS during which cells don’t respond normally to insulin, thus increasing the blood sugar level.

PCOS effects can be managed with proper treatment and care like physical exercises, balancing the intake of protein and carbohydrates, eating small, healthy meals throughout the day, etc.

Why Water Birthing is Better Than Regular Birth

Water birthing is an ancient technique that helps in reducing labour pain for women, making the process smoother and relaxing for the expectant mother. Because the baby is in the amniotic fluid sac for nine months, birthing in a similar environment is gentler for the baby, leading to lesser painful contractions, increased production of endorphins, shorter labour period, among many other benefits. However, it is best suited for pregnant women who have had an uncomplicated pregnancy of 37 plus weeks.

Blind women trained to find breast cancer lumps by feel are better than doctors at the task

Medical Tactile Examiners, or MTEs, are visually impaired women who work in India, Mexico, Colombia, and Austria, using their sense of touch to find breast nodules. These women spend much longer on breast examinations and are capable of finding smaller lumps. Their detection rate in India has been 100 percent so far.

They start with the lymph nodes in the neck, moving down to the collar bone, underarms, and every single centimetre of the breasts all the while being guided by adhesive strips marked in Braille. This ensures that they leave no part untouched and it also helps to report the exact location in case they find a lump.
